McKenna Reveals Ashley Young’s Likely Role at Ipswich Town

Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna has shared his thoughts on where new signing Ashley Young will fit into the squad.

The 40-year-old, who has enjoyed a decorated career with clubs like Manchester United and Inter Milan, joined the Blues on a free transfer from Everton yesterday.

Young didn’t feature in the squad that secured a 3-1 pre-season victory over Aberdeen in Scotland on Friday, but he’s expected to be involved in Tuesday’s friendly against Charlton, taking place in Colchester.

Throughout his career, the 39-cap England international has showcased his versatility, playing as both a winger and full-back on either flank.

When asked about Young’s role, McKenna responded:
“Ashley is capable of playing in several positions, but his most consistent role last season with Everton — and likely here as well — is at right-back.

That said, he’s a smart, adaptable player who’s covered nearly every position on the pitch.”

Young will now compete with Ben Johnson and Harry Clarke for a starting role at right-back.

As for any potential coaching role, McKenna said:
“He’s not thinking about that just yet. Maybe we’ll win him over by the end of the season — we’ve convinced a few before! But right now, his focus is fully on playing and helping the team reach our goals this season. That’s exactly what we need from him.”

McKenna also explained why Young was brought in:
“He offers us something different on multiple levels. His experience is invaluable — he’s won titles in different countries and had a long, successful Premier League career.

“You don’t last that long at the top level without having something special. For Ashley, it’s his drive and competitive edge.

He’s still performing well — he had a good season with Everton, including strong performances against us and in the league overall.”

McKenna concluded by highlighting the importance of Young’s presence in the dressing room:

“We’ve lost a lot of experience from the squad this year. Ashley brings that back into the group, and it’s clear he still has a lot to offer on the pitch as well.”
