Godwin ObajeA week after Liam Payne’s tragic death in Argentina, fans have reignited a wave of support for One Direction’s music, with all five of the band’s albums returning to the UK Top 40.
Leading the resurgence is Midnight Memories, which now sits at number 13—an extraordinary 517% increase in streams and sales compared to the previous week, according to the Official Charts Company. Other One Direction albums also made strong returns: Made in the A.M. (21), Four (22), Take Me Home (25), and Up All Night (38).
Three of the band’s beloved singles—Night Changes (6), Story Of My Life (9), and What Makes You Beautiful (23)—have also re-entered the singles chart. Payne’s solo material saw renewed attention as well, with Strip That Down (41), For You (43), and his final solo release, Teardrops, debuting at number 85.
Payne died on 16 October at age 31 after falling from a third-floor hotel balcony in Buenos Aires. He is survived by his seven-year-old son, Bear, with former partner Cheryl.
Tributes have poured in from around the world. His One Direction bandmate Niall Horan said he was “absolutely devastated”, describing Payne as “the brightest [person] in any room.” Payne’s girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, wrote on Instagram that he would always be her “guardian angel” and revealed they had been planning to marry.
His family, in a statement, said: “Liam will forever live in our hearts and we’ll remember him for his kind, funny, and brave soul.”
Fans have paid tribute through candlelit vigils, mural paintings, and—perhaps most significantly—through music. Night Changes, in particular, has emerged as a powerful anthem of mourning. Though it wasn’t the band’s highest-charting song at the time of release, it has since become a fan favourite. In 2022, it became the group’s first track to surpass a billion Spotify streams.
Its melancholic lyrics—“We’re only gettin’ older, baby / And I’ve been thinkin’ about it lately / Does it ever drive you crazy / Just how fast the night changes?”—have resonated deeply with listeners over the past week. Sung primarily by Harry Styles, the track’s themes of time, change, and loss seem painfully poignant now.
As grief continues to unfold, so too does the investigation. Argentine police have raided the hotel where Payne was staying, seizing hard drives and surveillance footage. A post-mortem confirmed he died from multiple traumas and internal and external bleeding. Authorities have denied speculative reports about toxicology results.
Payne’s father, Geoff, remains in Buenos Aires awaiting repatriation of his son’s body.
Meanwhile, former bandmate Zayn Malik has postponed his upcoming U.S. tour to grieve the “heartbreaking loss.” Nicole Scherzinger, who helped form One Direction on The X Factor, shared a heartfelt tribute: “It was such a blessing to get to work with you recently. We shared the same love and passion for music and I will forever remember the meaningful and joyful conversations we had.”
Scherzinger and Payne had recently filmed Building The Band, a Netflix talent show, whose future now remains uncertain.
In both music and memory, Liam Payne’s presence continues to echo powerfully.
