Rangers have officially confirmed the signing of defender Emmanuel Fernandez on a four-year contract, making him the club’s third addition of the summer transfer window.
The 22-year-old centre-back joins the Ibrox outfit following his departure from Peterborough United, where he had emerged as a promising talent in League One. His move further highlights the club’s commitment to rejuvenating the squad under new manager Russell Martin, who is determined to build a younger, more athletic side capable of competing across all fronts next season.
Fernandez, who stands at 6ft 4in, arrives with a growing reputation as a composed, left-footed defender with strong aerial presence and ball-playing ability—qualities Martin places a high premium on. The manager is believed to have pushed personally for this deal, identifying Fernandez as a player who fits his preferred tactical model.
The London-born defender spoke of his excitement after sealing the move to Glasgow. “It’s a huge club with a massive fanbase and incredible history,” Fernandez said. “I’m proud to be here and can’t wait to get started. I’ve had good conversations with the manager and coaching staff already—they’ve made me feel wanted and told me exactly how I fit into the plans. That was important for me.”
Fernandez will now link up with his new teammates as part of Rangers’ pre-season training schedule, which includes trips to Europe as well as domestic friendlies ahead of the Champions League qualifiers and the Premiership curtain-raiser.
His arrival follows the recent signings of Joe Rothwell and Max Aarons, both of whom also worked previously with Martin. The trio of early signings signals a clear intention from the new management team to hit the ground running.
Sporting Director Nils Koppen praised the club’s recruitment work and underlined the belief in Fernandez’s long-term potential. “Emmanuel is a player we’ve tracked for some time. He has all the physical and technical attributes to thrive here, and we’re excited about the impact he can make,” Koppen said.
With Connor Goldson returning from a lengthy injury layoff and Leon Balogun expected to play a more rotational role this season, Fernandez adds valuable depth and a fresh option on the left side of central defence.
Meanwhile, Rangers are continuing talks over a move for Wigan Athletic’s Norwegian playmaker Thelo Aasgaard. The 22-year-old is highly regarded by Martin and the club remain hopeful of securing a deal in the coming days, though discussions are ongoing amid interest from other suitors.
For now, the spotlight remains on Fernandez, whose arrival is another clear statement of intent from a Rangers side in the midst of a significant summer rebuild.
