Leeds United are stepping up their search for a new first-choice goalkeeper this summer, with reports suggesting the club have turned their attention to an £8 million-rated shot-stopper from Ligue 1. It comes after unsuccessful attempts to bring in Nick Pope and Caoimhin Kelleher, with both Premier League keepers now considered out of reach.
A new goalkeeper has become a clear priority at Elland Road after Daniel Farke dropped Illan Meslier for the final seven games of the 2024/25 Championship campaign. Meslier’s omission raised eyebrows at the time, but there now appears to be a clear intention to move on from the Frenchman.
Meslier is expected to leave the club in the coming weeks. According to The Athletic’s Phil Hay, “he’s done at Leeds,” with the club reportedly offering him to teams across Europe in a bid to secure a summer transfer. That development, coupled with Karl Darlow’s status as a reliable but aging back-up, has forced the Whites into the market once again.
Leeds had initially explored the possibility of bringing in Nick Pope, who is understood to be available following Newcastle’s recent business in the goalkeeper department. However, the former Burnley man is believed to be holding out for Premier League football, a stance that put Leeds at a disadvantage.
Interest also cooled on Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher, another long-term target. The Republic of Ireland international is valued highly by the Anfield club, and Leeds were reluctant to meet the asking price amid ongoing uncertainty over their own budget and financial fair play limits.
That has led the recruitment team to pivot toward the continent, where options may present better value. The current focus is on a goalkeeper plying his trade in France’s top tier, with a valuation of around £8 million. While the identity of the player has not yet been publicly confirmed, Leeds are confident that the deal is realistic and achievable before the start of pre-season.
Daniel Farke is understood to be keen on securing a keeper who is comfortable playing out from the back and capable of commanding his area — qualities that were inconsistently displayed by Meslier over the past two seasons. Though still just 24, Meslier’s development has plateaued, and the decision to drop him in the business end of the season suggests Farke has made his mind up.
Sources close to the club insist that Leeds want a new number one in place before their opening Championship fixture in August. With promotion the clear aim after falling short last term, there is a strong belief that a dependable presence between the posts is non-negotiable.
For now, the club will hope that its shift in strategy, moving from domestic targets to the European market, proves more fruitful. The pressure is on to find the right man — and fast.
