Sunderland’s play-off preparations took a hit as they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Bristol City at Ashton Gate. Despite being reduced to 10 men after Trai Hume’s early red card, the Black Cats showed remarkable defensive resilience, with goalkeeper Anthony Patterson making several key saves.
Eliezer Mayenda’s stunning goal gave Sunderland the lead, as he beat three Bristol City defenders before wrong-footing goalkeeper Max O’Leary with a clinical finish. However, Rob Dickie’s stunning leveller and Ross McCrorie’s late winner secured victory for the Robins.
Bristol City dominated possession and had 27 shots on goal, but Sunderland’s defensive effort was impressive, despite being a man down. “If indeed this was a dress rehearsal for the play-offs, Bristol City learnt a couple of daunting truths about Sunderland – they’re incredibly difficult to break down and they have players capable of turning a game in an instant,” said Dominic Shaw, Sport Reporter.
Mayenda’s goal was a highlight of the match, showcasing his skill and confidence. “The young striker was immense at Ashton Gate,” Shaw added. Despite the defeat, Sunderland’s defensive performance was impressive, and they will look to build on this in their upcoming fixtures.
