Leeds United’s summer transfer plans have taken another twist, with reports emerging that the club is eyeing a potential move for Liverpool and England defender Joe Gomez.
The Whites are close to completing the signing of Slovenian centre-back Jaka Bijol from Udinese, and now appear to be exploring further options in defence. According to multiple sources, including claims from Merseyside, Leeds have expressed interest in Gomez, who may be available for around £30m as Liverpool look to balance their books under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.
Gomez, 28, has been linked with a move away from Anfield for some time. A proposed £45m switch to Newcastle United last summer collapsed late in the window, and with competition at Liverpool intensifying following new arrivals such as Florian Wirtz, the versatile defender may finally be on the move.
Despite Leeds’ reported approach, the timing of the speculation has raised eyebrows, especially with the imminent announcement of Bijol’s arrival. The Slovenian is expected to strengthen a central defensive unit that already includes Joe Rodon, Pascal Struijk and Ethan Ampadu – making a big-money move for another centre-back appear unlikely.
As Leeds Live noted: “Given the imminent announcement that Leeds have signed Jaka Bijol from Udinese, a link to Gomez seems a strange one, with the timing also strange.” The publication added that Gomez’s salary demands and Liverpool’s valuation could complicate matters, even with the mooted fee now being significantly lower than the £45m previously quoted.
What remains undeniable, however, is the quality Gomez would bring to Elland Road. With 15 England caps, two Premier League titles and a Champions League medal to his name, the defender offers experience and versatility. He has operated effectively across the entire backline – as a centre-half and both full-back positions – and would provide a commanding presence in a side looking to re-establish itself in the Premier League.
“Talk of Leeds United joining Crystal Palace and West Ham in pursuing Gomez feels a stretch, at least at present,” the report continued, suggesting that the speculation may be more indicative of agent manoeuvring than serious negotiation. Nevertheless, it also conceded that “it’s certainly an acquisition which would strengthen Daniel Farke’s squad no end.”
From a tactical standpoint, Farke may relish the prospect of adding such a flexible option to his backline. However, it remains to be seen whether Leeds are willing – or able – to devote another sizeable chunk of their transfer budget to a defender, with left-back and wide attacking roles also in need of reinforcements.
For now, Gomez’s future remains uncertain. Leeds may well be in the conversation, but unless Liverpool significantly lower their demands and the player himself is keen on a move to Elland Road, this could be another case of transfer talk without firm intent.
Still, the potential arrival of a two-time Premier League winner would undoubtedly shift the mood in West Yorkshire – and give Leeds added steel in defence as they prepare for the rigours of the top flight.
