Rangers have wrapped up their fifth signing of a busy summer transfer window with the arrival of Norway international Thelo Aasgaard from Luton Town in a deal worth around £3.5 million.
Aasgaard, 23, becomes the latest addition to Russell Martin’s reshaped squad as the new Ibrox boss puts his stamp on the team ahead of the upcoming Scottish Premiership campaign. The attacking midfielder follows Lyall Cameron, Max Aarons, Joe Rothwell and Emmanuel Fernandez through the door, in what has been a statement of intent from Rangers’ board to back their manager in the transfer market.
The deal for Aasgaard, first revealed by Mail Sport earlier this week, is seen as a key piece of Martin’s plan to bring a more progressive, possession-based style to Ibrox. The Norwegian carved out a reputation south of the border as a technically gifted player with a knack for goals, having come through Liverpool’s academy before establishing himself at Wigan Athletic and then moving to Luton Town in January.
However, Luton’s relegation to League One paved the way for Rangers to move swiftly for his signature, with Aasgaard understood to have attracted interest from other clubs in the English Championship.
Speaking to the club’s media team after putting pen to paper, Aasgaard said Martin’s vision for the team was a major factor in his decision to move to Glasgow. “I am delighted to be here,” he said. “I have been waiting for it, but I am glad to get it over the line. The way the manager wants us to play really suits me and I can’t wait to get started and show the fans what I can do.”
Martin, who arrived at Rangers earlier this summer with a clear brief to rebuild a squad that fell short last season, has wasted no time in freshening up his options. While much of the focus has been on adding defensive stability with the signings of Aarons and Fernandez, the addition of Aasgaard adds an extra layer of creativity in midfield — something the club have lacked in tight domestic fixtures and in Europe.
The challenge now will be integrating the new arrivals quickly, with Rangers set to embark on an intense pre-season schedule before competitive action returns later this month. For Aasgaard, the move also offers the chance to cement his place in Norway’s national squad, having won his first senior caps earlier this year.
Rangers supporters will be hoping the club’s early transfer business pays dividends when the new season kicks off. With Celtic once again the side to beat domestically, and European qualifiers looming, Martin knows there is little margin for error as he tries to mould his new-look team into genuine title challengers.
