Everton are targeting a move for experienced Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson as part of a dual-pronged plan to bolster their attacking options this summer, with Villarreal’s Thierno Barry also high on their shortlist.
David Moyes is wasting little time in shaping the squad in his image following a stabilising end to the 2024/25 campaign. The Toffees secured mid-table safety after the Scot replaced Sean Dyche in January, but a significant overhaul is expected at Goodison Park as Moyes prepares for his first full season in charge.
One of the key areas under scrutiny is the centre-forward position. Dominic Calvert-Lewin is set to leave the club at the end of his contract this month, and with Youssef Chermiti also potentially heading out on loan, reinforcements are being actively pursued.
According to The Sun, Everton are closely monitoring Callum Wilson’s situation. The 33-year-old is out of contract at St James’ Park after Newcastle United opted not to activate a one-year extension on his current £110,000-a-week deal. Talks over a reduced contract remain ongoing, but no agreement has been reached.
That has opened the door for Everton, who see Wilson as a valuable addition — a player who can offer depth, experience, and proven Premier League pedigree alongside first-choice striker Beto.
Wilson endured a frustrating campaign in 2024/25, featuring just 22 times and managing only one goal across 429 minutes of football. Nevertheless, his track record in the top flight and availability on a free transfer make him a financially sensible option.
The former Bournemouth forward is also attracting interest from Saudi Arabian clubs, though no final decision on his future has yet been made.
Everton are not limiting their ambitions to just Wilson, however. Villarreal’s rising star Thierno Barry is another name under consideration, with the France Under-21 international turning heads during the ongoing U21 European Championship. Barry is viewed internally as a “leading target”, but Villarreal are reluctant to sell and are demanding a fee in the region of £40 million.
A deal for Barry would represent a long-term investment, and Everton’s hierarchy are exploring the possibility of signing both strikers to give Moyes both immediate impact and future potential in attack.
While Barry would require significant outlay, Wilson’s potential arrival on a free would balance the financial scales. His injury record remains a concern, but if Everton can manage his fitness, his know-how and clinical edge in front of goal could prove valuable.
With Calvert-Lewin likely to depart and Chermiti in line for a temporary move, the Toffees are clearly planning for a refresh up front — one that blends experience with youth, pragmatism with ambition.
