Leeds United Agree Deal in Principle for Newcastle Midfielder Sean Longstaff

Leeds United have taken a significant step forward in their midfield rebuild after agreeing a deal in principle with Newcastle United for the transfer of Sean Longstaff. The 27-year-old midfielder is currently with the Magpies in Austria for their pre-season camp, but the agreement suggests he will soon be granted permission to conclude personal terms and undergo a medical with the Whites.

Leeds have been persistent in their pursuit of Longstaff, submitting four bids throughout negotiations. Their latest offer is believed to be worth £12 million, with an additional £3 million in potential add-ons. This breakthrough comes after Newcastle initially rejected a £10m offer plus £2m in add-ons.

A source close to the deal had previously told Leeds Live that they would be “surprised if Longstaff is not ultimately sold,” given that he has just 12 months remaining on his current contract. Although manager Eddie Howe remains a fan of the academy product, he has not been able to offer assurances over regular first-team minutes. Longstaff featured in only eight Premier League matches last season, with none coming after January.

The timing is crucial for Newcastle. With the midfielder unlikely to sign a new contract, the club risk losing him for free next summer. A summer transfer offers a rare opportunity to generate pure profit from a homegrown player.

Despite never forcing an exit, Longstaff has been open to a move to Elland Road. It’s understood he is keen on the project under Daniel Farke, and a switch to West Yorkshire is likely to come with a pay rise and significantly more game time. Leeds currently lack Premier League experience in midfield, with Ethan Ampadu the only player in that area boasting top-flight appearances. Longstaff brings a wealth of experience, having made 171 Premier League appearances to date.

With this deal nearing completion, Leeds may not be done in the transfer market. German midfielder Anton Stach, currently at Hoffenheim, remains on their radar. However, negotiations are expected to be more drawn out, with competition from other clubs delaying progress.

The imminent arrival of Longstaff would represent Leeds’ fifth signing of the summer and pushes their transfer spend towards the £40 million mark. Sources close to the club suggest that midfield reinforcements have been prioritised, especially given the uncertainty around Darko Gyabi’s future following his loan at Plymouth Argyle.

This strategic signing appears to be a win-win for both clubs: Newcastle gain a healthy transfer fee while trimming their squad, and Leeds secure an experienced Premier League player to stabilise their midfield as they prepare for life back in the top flight.

Longstaff even netted in a behind-closed-doors friendly over the weekend, underlining his readiness for the season ahead. If all goes to plan, his next matchday preparations could soon be made in a Leeds United shirt.
