Leeds United have stepped up their bid to bring in Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff as they look to inject Premier League experience into Daniel Farke’s squad ahead of their top-flight return.
The Whites, who clinched promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, have tabled an offer worth £10 million plus a further £2 million in add-ons for the 27-year-old, marking their third attempt to prise him away from St James’ Park.
Sources close to the talks say personal terms have already been agreed with the player, who is keen on the move after falling down the pecking order on Tyneside. Longstaff, a product of Newcastle’s academy, has been a loyal servant to the Magpies, but game time has been increasingly scarce over the past year.
“I’ve always given everything for this club, but I need to play football,” Longstaff told friends recently, according to insiders. “If this is the right step for me and the club gets a fair deal, then I’m ready for the next challenge.”
Newcastle triggered a one-year extension last season to tie Longstaff down until June 2026, but talks over a fresh long-term deal stalled back in winter 2024. Since then, his appearances have dried up, and with Eddie Howe continuing to reshape his midfield options, an exit now seems inevitable.
Leeds have been clear about their desire to add top-flight know-how to a side that, while dynamic in the Championship, will need proven heads to navigate a more demanding division. Longstaff, with 171 Premier League appearances under his belt, fits the bill perfectly.
It’s understood Leeds see the box-to-box midfielder as a key piece of their puzzle — someone who can balance the engine room alongside younger legs while offering leadership on and off the pitch.
“Sean’s profile ticks a lot of boxes,” one club source told The Athletic last month. “He knows the league, he’s hungry to prove himself again, and he’s the sort of character who will raise standards every day.”
So far, Newcastle have yet to respond formally to the latest offer, but the fee is believed to be close to the limit of what Leeds are willing to pay. Club insiders admit they have other options in mind if the deal stalls — with at least two alternative targets lined up — but Longstaff remains their priority.
Longstaff himself is said to be keen to ensure his boyhood club receives reasonable compensation rather than risk leaving for nothing when his contract winds down. His loyalty to Newcastle is well known, but at 27, he wants to play regular football and be part of a project where he feels trusted.
Leeds, for their part, are expected to push for a swift resolution so Farke can integrate any new signings into the squad’s pre-season preparations. The Yorkshire club have already shown they mean business in the market this summer, and landing Longstaff would send another clear signal of intent that they’re not returning to the top flight just to make up the numbers.
Whether Newcastle decide to cash in now or gamble on fresh contract talks down the line remains to be seen — but one thing is certain: the Sean Longstaff saga could become one of the first intriguing subplots of this summer’s window.
