Leeds United’s summer rebuild continues to take shape, but their plans to replace Illan Meslier have hit a fresh snag following an untimely injury to top target Lucas Perri.
Daniel Farke’s side, preparing for their Premier League return under the lights at Elland Road against Everton on August 18, have already been busy this window. Sporting director Adam Underwood has overseen a defensive overhaul with the arrivals of Jaka Bijol, Sebastiaan Bornauw, and Gabriel Gudmundsson, while Junior Firpo and Max Wöber have departed and Sam Byram signed a contract extension.
With the backline now settled and a tactical shift to a 4-3-3 reducing the need for a traditional No.10, Leeds have also moved to reinforce midfield, bringing in Anton Stach and Newcastle’s Sean Longstaff. The next areas of focus are a reliable first-choice goalkeeper, a left-sided winger, and a top striker to lead the line.
In goal, Lyon’s Lucas Perri has emerged as a key target to replace Meslier, who has fallen down the pecking order. Farke has made it clear he no longer sees Meslier as his No.1, with the Frenchman expected to leave once his contract expires in June 2026—if not sooner. Karl Darlow, while dependable, is seen more as a backup option.
However, Leeds’ pursuit of Perri has been dealt a blow. The Brazilian shot-stopper, valued at around £13 million, has reportedly picked up a muscle injury during pre-season. According to French outlet Made in Gones, the issue will keep Perri sidelined for Lyon’s upcoming friendlies against RWDM Brussels and Hamburg, delaying any potential movement.
Despite the setback, Leeds remain interested in the 26-year-old, who is viewed internally as a “priority” signing. Although Perri is not actively seeking an exit, the financial situation at Lyon following their successful appeal against relegation could force a rethink. Club owner John Textor may be open to sales, presenting Leeds with a potential opportunity to pounce later in the window.
Perri is one of three Brazilians Leeds are monitoring as they look to inject flair and reliability into the squad. Fulham’s Rodrigo Muniz remains their number one target up front. While a £26 million bid was recently knocked back, The Yorkshire Evening Post’s Graham Smyth has confirmed that Leeds are not giving up on the striker, who fits Farke’s pressing style.
On the flanks, Leeds are tracking Feyenoord’s Igor Paixão. The Dutch side are currently in negotiations with Marseille, but Leeds are hopeful that talks collapse, leaving the door open. Paixão, who contributed to 37 goals in all competitions last season, would bring instant impact and a touch of Brazilian flair to Elland Road.
With the new season fast approaching, time is ticking for Leeds to finalise their remaining deals. But if Underwood can land all three targets—Perri, Muniz, and Paixão—the Whites could boast a trio of Samba stars in their starting XI come opening day.
