Everton Eye Douglas Luiz Transfer as Moyes Plots Midfield Reinforcement

Everton are exploring a potential summer swoop for Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz as David Moyes continues his rebuild at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, sources in Italy have revealed.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport (16 July), the Toffees are investigating various ways to bring the 27-year-old Brazilian back to the Premier League, with a deal in the region of £30million under discussion. Juventus, who signed Luiz from Aston Villa just a year ago for £42.5million, are reportedly ready to offload the midfielder after a frustrating debut season in Serie A.

Luiz made just three league starts last term, with most of his 19 appearances coming from the bench. Despite boasting a passing accuracy of 90% and creating three big chances, he failed to register a single goal or assist in the Italian top flight.

However, Everton boss Moyes remains convinced that Luiz can rediscover his form in England, following an impressive 2023/24 campaign at Villa where he registered 20 goal contributions under Unai Emery.

Luiz’s situation has reportedly attracted attention from West Ham as well, with the Hammers said to be preparing a loan offer worth over £8million with a conditional buy option between £22million and £26million. That could force Juventus to reconsider their current valuation as both Premier League sides circle.

If Everton can strike the right deal, Luiz could prove a valuable addition to a squad already bolstered by three summer arrivals. Among them is goalkeeper Mark Travers, who joined from Bournemouth for £4million and is set to challenge Jordan Pickford for the No.1 shirt.

Travers becomes the third senior signing for Moyes this window, following the capture of highly-rated forward Thierno Barry. But the club are not done yet, with further reinforcements being lined up—including at left-back.

One of the most intriguing targets is former Tottenham defender Sergio Reguilón. The 28-year-old Spaniard is now a free agent and is reportedly attracting interest from Everton, as well as Bournemouth and West Ham.

Reguilón’s time at Spurs ended with a string of loan spells, including stints at Manchester United and Brentford. Despite his recent lack of regular football, his pedigree is unquestionable, and Moyes may see the experienced full-back as a low-risk, high-reward signing.

Former Everton scout Bryan King believes Reguilón could be a smart piece of business. Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, King said:
“He (Reguilón) is still only 28 years old. With the clubs he’s played for, that level of experience, I think he could be a very good addition for Everton. I think he’ll be offered a two-year contract, with an option for another year.”

He added:
“It’s a chance to bring in a player who is going to cost nothing, but he’s experienced. He didn’t make it at Tottenham, and he’s looking for a new challenge. Everton is a good football club to join. If I were him, I’d consider it.”

With Moyes targeting both proven Premier League performers and undervalued talent, Everton appear ready to accelerate their transfer activity in the coming weeks as the new season approaches.
