Godwin ObajeRangers Wrap Up Fifth Summer Signing as Thelo Aasgaard Joins From Luton
Rangers have continued their busy summer rebuild with the signing of Norwegian midfielder Thelo Aasgaard from Luton Town, marking their fifth new addition under head coach Russell Martin.
The 23-year-old, who will wear the No 11 shirt at Ibrox, has signed a four-year deal after Rangers agreed a fee understood to be around £3.5 million. It’s another statement of intent from the club as they look to reshape the squad for the 2025/26 campaign.
Aasgaard arrives with plenty of potential and a hunger to prove himself after a turbulent spell in England. The attacking midfielder began his career in Liverpool’s youth ranks before spending five years at Wigan Athletic, establishing himself as a creative spark. A move to Luton Town followed in January but despite his efforts, the Hatters slipped out of the Championship, opening the door for Rangers to swoop.
Speaking after putting pen to paper, Aasgaard made clear just how much the move means to him. “I am delighted to be here. I have been waiting for it, but I am glad to get it over the line,” he said. “When I heard about Rangers I was over the moon. I have played against the manager’s teams a few times and I always pictured myself in his team and to be here now is really good.”
His enthusiasm for the Scottish game’s unique demands will go down well with supporters who want players ready to embrace its intensity. “It was an easy decision, I love the number of games here, it is like the EFL and I love playing. The stature and history is enough as well,” he added.
Head coach Russell Martin, who has been quick to put his stamp on the squad since taking charge, was equally upbeat. “We are delighted to bring Thelo to the club. He is a player who we have liked for a long time, and we believe he possesses the necessary qualities to thrive at this club and in this team,” Martin said. “He wants to win and develop as a player, and we believe we can help him do both.”
Sporting Director Kevin Thelwell described the new arrival as a player capable of adding a spark in the final third — an area Rangers were determined to strengthen this window. “Thelo is a player who has been on the radar of several clubs around Europe,” Thelwell said. “He is a player capable of making the difference in the final third of the pitch and strengthens an area of the squad that we feel is important. We believe he will be a fantastic addition to the side and an important asset in the years to come.”
Aasgaard joins defenders Emmanuel Fernandez and Max Aarons and midfielders Joe Rothwell and Lyall Cameron as part of what’s shaping up to be a significant overhaul at Ibrox. And the work is far from done — Rangers continue to be linked with further reinforcements, including experienced centre-backs Conor Coady of Leicester City and Wolves’ Nasser Djiga.
Fans won’t have to wait long for a first look at their new signings, with Rangers set to kick off pre-season on Sunday against Belgian outfit Club Brugge at Ibrox. For Aasgaard, it will be the first chance to pull on the famous shirt and show exactly why the club believe he can be a difference-maker in the seasons ahead.
