Wolverhampton Wanderers are on the verge of completing the signing of highly rated Spanish midfielder Fer López, with confirmation expected within hours — barring any last-minute hitches.

The 21-year-old has already passed a medical and finalised personal terms, with reports from Atlántico stating that the formalities of his transfer to Molineux are complete. Wolves will pay a total package worth €25million to secure the services of the Celta Vigo talent, with €23m in fixed fees and a further €2m in potential add-ons.

López’s arrival marks a significant investment by the Premier League club, who are believed to be paying slightly above the midfielder’s release clause to facilitate a staggered payment agreement. While the exact payment structure remains undisclosed, there is speculation it could mirror the formula used in the deal for striker Jørgen Strand Larsen — a loan arrangement with an obligatory purchase clause.

The length of López’s contract has been reported as five years, tying him to Wolves until the summer of 2030.

Despite the transfer not yet being officially announced by either club, sources close to the deal insist it is “done” and awaiting public confirmation. The delay appears to be only administrative, with both sides content with the final agreement.

López’s departure has sparked outrage among sections of the Celta Vigo fanbase, many of whom believed the Spain Under-21 international would remain at Balaídos for at least one more season. His development in Galicia had made him a firm favourite among supporters, and the decision to sell him at this stage of his career has left many feeling blindsided.

“[The move] is causing outrage among the club’s fan base,” Atlántico reported, noting that supporters had hoped López would continue his progress in La Liga before making a leap abroad.

Instead, he will now become the latest Spanish export to the English top flight, with Wolves clearly confident the young midfielder can adapt quickly to the Premier League’s intensity. The move also signals the club’s intent to bolster their midfield options ahead of the 2025–26 campaign, as manager Gary O’Neil looks to reshape his squad after a transitional season.

López had attracted attention from several European sides thanks to his composure on the ball, vision in the final third, and maturity beyond his years. While not a marquee name yet, Wolves are banking on his ceiling being significantly higher than the €25m investment — especially in a market where young midfielders are at a premium.

The final announcement is expected later today, assuming no unforeseen complications emerge.
