Leeds United are bracing for the imminent departure of promising forward Mateo Joseph, following his request to leave the club in search of more regular playing time.
Joseph, 21, has informed manager Daniel Farke of his desire to move back to Spain, with Real Betis understood to be leading the race for his signature. The decision follows weeks of growing uncertainty over the striker’s future at Elland Road, exacerbated by limited opportunities and Leeds’ ongoing recruitment drive in attacking positions.
Speaking during a press conference in Germany this week, where Leeds are currently based for their pre-season training, Farke confirmed Joseph’s request:
“Joseph has asked to leave for Spain,” the manager revealed. “His minutes looked limited, so I guess it makes sense.”
Joseph was a key part of Spain’s U21 squad this summer and had previously hinted at a potential exit during the tournament. He has since opted not to travel with the Leeds squad to their German training camp and will remain in the UK while discussions continue.
La Liga journalist Joe Brennan, who closely follows developments at Real Betis, weighed in on the situation, highlighting Leeds’ cautious stance in the transfer market:
“We know Betis have been linked heavily,” Brennan told MOT Leeds News. “I guess the issue now is what Leeds are willing to accept. Will they take a lower offer now if Joseph leaves, or will a loan suffice? I’m not too sure, but what’s clear is that Leeds aren’t bending over for anyone in this transfer market.”
Joseph made six league appearances last season, contributing three goals and three assists, and was seen as a useful squad player. However, the club’s failure to clarify his long-term role, coupled with the arrival of new signings, appears to have pushed the Spanish-born forward toward the exit.
Daniel Farke’s revelation came just days after Leeds began their pre-season campaign with a draw against Manchester United in Stockholm, followed by a behind-closed-doors win against SC Verl in Germany.
