As Everton prepares for a transformative summer, manager David Moyes has candidly discussed the club’s transfer ambitions and the challenges posed by financial restrictions. With the move to the new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium on the horizon, Moyes is keen to reshape the squad to usher in a new era for the Toffees.
Strategic Recruitment Amid Financial Fair Play Constraints
Despite the backing of new owners, The Friedkin Group, Moyes acknowledges that Everton remains constrained by the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). He expressed his surprise at the extent of these limitations, stating, “I’ve been really surprised at the way it’s restricting the football club. Everton’s a huge football club and should be competing with many of the big clubs in the country.”
Moyes emphasized the importance of prudent spending, noting, “We don’t want to get ourselves in a position we’ve been in before with points deductions, so we have to be really mindful of what we do.”
Targeted Signings to Bolster the Squad
In light of these financial considerations, Moyes is focusing on strategic acquisitions to strengthen key areas of the squad. One primary target is Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap, who has a £30 million release clause following Ipswich’s relegation. Moyes highlighted the opportunity for Delap to play a central role at Everton, stating, “We’re interested in Liam Delap if he’s interested in us.”
Another potential addition is Liverpool winger Ben Doak. The 19-year-old had an impressive loan spell at Middlesbrough before an injury curtailed his season. Everton’s interest in Doak is notable, as a move would mark the first direct transfer from Liverpool to Everton since 2002.
Moyes is also eyeing West Bromwich Albion’s Tom Fellows, a 21-year-old winger who led the Championship in assists last season. Described as “unbelievable” by teammate Karlan Grant, Fellows could provide the creative spark Everton seeks on the flanks.
Evaluating Current Squad and Potential Departures
With several players out of contract, including Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Seamus Coleman, and Abdoulaye Doucouré, Moyes faces decisions on who to retain. He stressed the need for commitment, saying, “I need a lot of those players to show that they’re up for helping us and not thinking about other things. There is a chance for a freshness.”
Moyes is also considering making Jesper Lindstrom’s loan move from Napoli permanent. The Danish winger has become a regular under Moyes, and discussions have begun about a potential £19 million deal.
Building for the Future
As Everton transitions to their new stadium, Moyes is focused on assembling a squad capable of competing at the highest level. He acknowledged the need for elite players, stating, “The stadium looks the business, it looks elite. We need to start getting some elite players and start looking at the level of the players so we can give everybody something to shout about at the new stadium.”
While financial constraints pose challenges, Moyes remains optimistic about the club’s direction under new ownership. He believes that with careful planning and strategic signings, Everton can build a competitive squad for the future.
