The Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly eyeing a potential trade for Chicago Bears running back D’Andre Swift ahead of the NFL Draft. Swift, who has two years remaining on his three-year, $24 million deal, has been linked to a possible change of scenery due to his declining performance.
According to Pro Football Network, Swift’s average of 3.8 yards per carry in 2024 was a career-worst, and his 39.5% rushing success rate ranked 42nd out of 46 RBs with 100-plus rushes. The Steelers, who have already hosted nine running backs for pre-draft visits, might look to add a veteran to shore up the position alongside Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell.
The potential trade could be timed strategically, with the Bears potentially waiting until after June 1 to save $8 million in cap room and incur a minimal dead cap hit. This would also give the Bears the opportunity to assess their draft picks and decide if they want to keep Swift.
Swift’s performance last season saw him total just short of 1,000 yards on 253 carries with 959 yards and six touchdowns, and caught 42 passes for 386 yards. In comparison, Warren tallied 511 yards on 120 rushes with one touchdown, while Gainwell rushed for 290 yards on 75 carries with one touchdown.
The Steelers’ interest in Swift highlights their efforts to strengthen their running back position ahead of the NFL Draft. With several positions to address, the team will be looking to make strategic moves to bolster their roster.
