Rangers have completed the signing of Emmanuel Fernandez from Peterborough United on a four-year deal, with the promising defender set to fill the void left by Leon Balogun’s departure.
The 22-year-old centre-back joins the Ibrox outfit after an impressive campaign in League One, where he made 42 appearances and netted five goals. His performances, particularly in Peterborough’s FA Cup run—highlighted by a standout display against Premier League side Everton—earned him attention across Europe. Despite interest from clubs in France and Germany, Rangers moved swiftly to seal his signature.

The move represents another step in manager Russell Martin’s ongoing summer rebuild, with Fernandez becoming the latest addition as Rangers prepare for the 2025/26 season. Fernandez, who is eligible to represent Nigeria through his Yoruba heritage, adds another Super Eagles-linked player to the Rangers squad, joining striker Cyriel Dessers. While he is yet to feature internationally, his eligibility and growing reputation could see him emerge as a future option for Nigeria.
Born in England, Emmanuel Olusegun Opeyemi Fernandez began his career at Brentford before spells at Gillingham and non-league Ramsgate. He joined Peterborough in 2021, gradually working his way into the first team setup and becoming a key figure last season.
His composure in possession, aerial presence, and versatility across the backline were key attributes that caught the eye of scouts. His rise was underlined by a composed showing in the Vertu Motors Trophy final, and he’s now poised to test himself in the Scottish Premiership under the pressure of regular European football.
For Rangers, the signing brings renewed energy to their defensive line following Balogun’s exit. At 35, the Nigerian veteran had been a dependable presence at Ibrox, but his departure created both a tactical and leadership void. While Fernandez is still developing, the club sees him as a player who can grow into a central role in the seasons ahead.
Fernandez’s integration into the squad will also see him link up with Dessers, who enjoyed a productive season in front of goal and has quickly become a fan favourite at Ibrox.
