Sunderland Slip to Defeat Against Hull, but Le Bris Sees Positive Progress

Sunderland suffered a 2-1 defeat to Hull City in their latest pre-season friendly, but head coach Régis Le Bris remains optimistic about his side’s development.

Simon Adingra gave the Black Cats an early lead, only for Nathan Tinsdale to level the score.

Hull’s winner came from Abu Kamara after Sunderland made ten substitutions and introduced a more inexperienced lineup. Despite the result, Le Bris noted clear signs of progress from their previous loss to Hearts.

“It was a good test,” Le Bris said. “Pre-season is about building new habits and developing our playing style with new players through varied experiences.

We struggled against direct play in the Hearts game, but handled it better this time—so we’re moving forward as a team. We’ll need two or three more games to be fully ready.”

Le Bris emphasized the importance of setbacks as learning opportunities.

“Negative experiences are part of the process. The Hearts game taught us a lot about intensity and fighting spirit.

Matches against Sevilla and Sporting were more about control, which we handled well, but the Premier League will demand intensity. We were challenged again tonight, and I saw signs that our players are adapting and learning.”

The head coach was also pleased to see Simon Adingra score his first goal for Sunderland, set up by Chemsdine Talbi, who also impressed with his performance.

“We have high hopes for both of them,” Le Bris said. “They can make a real difference against opposition defences, but they need time—time to build chemistry with teammates and gain match experience, not just in training.”

The match also highlighted Sunderland’s need to strengthen their squad, particularly in goal and central defence.

While the expected arrival of Granit Xhaka will be a welcome boost, Le Bris acknowledges there’s still much work to do.

“Of course, as a manager, I’d love to have the full squad from day one, but that’s rarely the case,” he said. “The transfer window runs until the end of August, and that’s the reality for all teams.

Right now, our focus is on improving the players we have, and they’re responding well.”

He added: “Ideally, you want everyone settled early to build understanding and communication.

For someone like Reinildo, with his experience, that process will be quicker than for a young player. But again, our rivals are in the same situation, so we adapt.”
