Brentford have pulled off a surprise coup in the transfer market, signing former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson on a free transfer. The 35-year-old England international joins the Bees on a two-year deal following his exit from Ajax, bolstering a squad that recently lost key figures ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
Henderson’s arrival at the Gtech Community Stadium comes at a critical moment for Brentford, who are reshaping their midfield following the departure of Christian Nørgaard to Arsenal. The veteran midfielder brings a wealth of experience and leadership to a Brentford side aiming to remain competitive in the top flight.
Speaking on his decision to return to the Premier League, Henderson said:
“After a couple of years away I still have that fire to come back and play in the Premier League again. Obviously it’s the best league in the world, with the best players. So it’s a big challenge but one I’m keen on doing.”
The former England vice-captain, who has been capped 84 times for his country, adds not just depth but a winning pedigree to Brentford’s dressing room, having lifted the Premier League and Champions League with Liverpool. Head coach Keith Andrews emphasised the significance of the move, noting the club’s need for experienced heads following a summer of departures.
“When we became aware of Jordan’s availability, it was a pretty simple decision,” Andrews said. “We did our due diligence around his recent games to see where he is. He’s still phenomenally fit and he’s still phenomenally motivated to achieve things in the game, having already achieved a lot.”
“What Jordan will bring is that he has been one of the most influential leaders in modern Premier League years. He’s been at the forefront of driving for titles and Champions Leagues at a fantastic football club.”
Brentford’s move may be seen as a direct challenge to clubs like Leeds United, who will be battling to avoid relegation this season. Henderson’s leadership and experience could prove pivotal in tight matches, and his presence might provide the edge Brentford need in a league where margins are increasingly fine.
Andrews further explained the reasoning behind the move:
“With the void of experienced players leaving the building – Christian Nørgaard, Mark Flekken and Ben Mee – it was important to replace that… He also has experience at international level with England and, with that, comes a level of experience, professionalism and dedication to his profession – that’s the exact way we want to be as a football club.”
Elsewhere in the Premier League, Everton have completed the signing of goalkeeper Mark Travers from Bournemouth. The Republic of Ireland international has joined the Toffees for a fee believed to be in the region of £4 million, penning a four-year contract.
Travers said:
