Leeds United are reportedly targeting Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Julian Weigl as they prepare for life back in the Premier League. According to reports, the Whites have approached Weigl over a transfer to Elland Road, with manager Daniel Farke looking to reunite with his former captain.
Interestingly, Weigl recently met with Jurgen Klopp, the head of global soccer for Red Bull, which owns a minority stake in Leeds United. However, it’s been reported that Klopp held “intensive talks” with Weigl on behalf of Red Bull Salzburg, not Leeds.
Weigl is contracted to Monchengladbach until 2028, and any potential suitor would need to pay a significant transfer fee to secure his services. The midfielder reportedly earns around £2.6-3 million a year, meaning any new deal would likely require a package worth over £200,000 a week.
Leeds United may have an advantage in the transfer race, as Weigl has reportedly expressed a preference for a move to the Premier League. If Leeds secure promotion, they may be well-placed to sign the former Benfica ace.
The transfer talks come as Leeds look to strengthen their squad ahead of a potential return to the top flight. With only four games left to play in the Championship, the Whites are on course for automatic promotion, and Farke will be keen to finalize deals for key targets like Weigl.
