Everton are on the verge of completing the signings of two highly rated teenage defenders, as the club continues its significant push to rebuild both its first-team squad and its academy under new ownership.
According to The Athletic, 16-year-old centre-backs Reuben Gokah of Charlton Athletic and John Dodds of Hearts are expected to join Everton’s academy ranks ahead of the 2025/26 season. The move signals a clear shift in strategy, with the Friedkin Group and newly-appointed academy chief Nick Cox placing strong emphasis on youth development.
The Toffees’ academy setup, once the envy of many in English football, has struggled in recent years. Earlier this year, a source close to the club labelled it a “disgrace,” pointing to the club’s decline in grassroots scouting. In contrast to the 300 scouts employed during David Moyes’ first spell at the club, the number had dwindled to just 40 prior to this summer.
However, change is now well underway. Manchester United’s former Head of Academy, Nick Cox, has taken the reins at Finch Farm and is already making an impact. The recruitment of Gokah and Dodds is viewed internally as a significant step forward.
Gokah, an England youth international who has earned strong praise within academy circles, is widely regarded as a player with elite-level potential. One source suggested the teenager is tipped to go “right to the top,” highlighting the high expectations placed on his development.
The incoming pair are expected to begin their Everton careers in the Under-18 setup, though the club hopes their progress will be swift under the improved coaching structure now in place at Finch Farm.
Dodds, meanwhile, has been closely tracked by a number of clubs across England and Scotland. His arrival represents another coup for Everton’s youth recruitment drive, particularly as manager David Moyes is believed to be eager to tap into Scottish talent more regularly during his second spell in charge.
This dual signing comes amid a broader period of transition for Everton’s senior squad. Several senior players, including Abdoulaye Doucouré and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, departed following the expiration of their contracts earlier this summer.
Efforts are also ongoing to strengthen the first team, with Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz being eyed as a potential replacement for Doucouré. Reports indicate Everton are preparing a loan offer with an option to buy for the Brazil international.
Everton’s activity in both the senior and youth markets reflects the Friedkin Group’s long-term strategy to build a sustainable, competitive squad. With renewed investment and key structural changes, the club is aiming to restore its reputation as one of the top talent developers in English football.
As one source at Finch Farm noted, “It’s been years since Everton have made these types of additions” – but that may now be changing.
