Robin Pröpper’s Rangers Exit Stalls Amid Ownership Changes – FC Twente Awaiting Final Decision

Robin Pröpper’s expected return to FC Twente from Rangers has been delayed despite a deal being agreed in principle, as new ownership and management at Ibrox assess the club’s summer plans.

The 31-year-old centre-back, who joined Rangers from Twente last August, could be set for a swift return to his former club. Dutch outlet Soccer News first reported on 2 June that the Eredivisie side were “very serious” about re-signing the defender after just one season in Scotland.

That interest quickly developed. As revealed by multiple reports in the Netherlands, Pröpper has already agreed personal terms with Twente, and negotiations over a transfer fee – believed to be around €1.5 million – were close to completion earlier this month.

However, according to Tubantia, the move has now hit a pause due to off-field changes at Rangers. While the Dutch club have secured an agreement in principle with the Glasgow outfit for Pröpper’s return, there has been no green light yet from the Scottish side, who are undergoing a major internal restructure.

The delay stems from the recent takeover at Ibrox. On 30 May, a consortium led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises completed a majority buyout of the club, marking a new chapter in Rangers’ modern era. Days later, former Swansea City boss Russell Martin was appointed as the new permanent manager, replacing Philippe Clement.

With the club now under new leadership both in the boardroom and on the touchline, all ongoing transfer activity – including Pröpper’s departure – is being reviewed.

Twente, for their part, are growing increasingly eager for clarity. Tubantia reports that the Eredivisie side are “waiting for definitive answers. From club and player.” While Pröpper remains open to the return, the final decision is now expected to rest with Martin and the new hierarchy at Ibrox.

The Dutchman made 43 appearances for Rangers in all competitions during the 2024/25 campaign, scoring in victories over Celtic and Dundee United. However, his time in Glasgow was not without its struggles. Pröpper’s sending-off just 13 minutes into the Europa League quarter-final against Athletic Club and inconsistent domestic form drew criticism, raising doubts about his long-term suitability for the Scottish game.

Despite this, Twente remain keen to secure a reunion, and with a modest fee agreed, the ball is firmly in Rangers’ court.

Whether Martin sees a future for Pröpper at Ibrox remains unclear, particularly as the new boss looks to overhaul his squad ahead of Champions League qualifiers and another title challenge. The uncertainty could continue until Martin finalises his assessment of the current playing staff.

For now, Twente wait – and so too does Pröpper – as the Ibrox rebuild slowly takes shape.
