Godwin ObajeWolves Edge Closer to Christopher Wooh Deal as Trabzonspor Put on Hold
Wolverhampton Wanderers are making steady progress in their pursuit of Stade Rennais defender Christopher Wooh, with the player understood to favour a move to the Premier League over a switch to Turkey.
Last month, Africa Foot revealed that Wolves and Turkish side Trabzonspor were both in the running for the 23-year-old Cameroon international, with the Molineux club reportedly prepared to table a €5 million bid for his services.
Recent reports from Turkey suggested Trabzonspor had agreed a fee in the region of €5 million with Stade Rennais. In fact, Trabzonspor president Ertugrul Doğan was quoted last week confirming that an agreement had been reached with the Ligue 1 side. “We have reached an agreement with the Ligue 1 club,” Doğan said, but crucially added that Wooh himself “wants to go to the Premier League”.
That desire appears to be a decisive factor. A fresh update from Africa Foot now claims that Wooh has put Trabzonspor’s offer on hold, with sources close to the player saying he is not prioritising a move to the Süper Lig at this stage in his career. Instead, the defender is keen to continue playing in one of Europe’s top five leagues.
Wolves, now managed by Vítor Pereira, appear well-placed to capitalise on that preference. According to Africa Foot, “particularly Wolves appear to have made good progress” towards a deal that would see the highly-rated centre-back swap France for England this summer.
The Cameroon international, who is under contract at Rennes until 2026, is understood to be pushing for an exit this window. While Trabzonspor remain interested, Wooh’s decision to stall on the Turkish side’s bid is being interpreted as a clear signal that his heart is set on the Premier League.
Negotiations are still ongoing, with all parties seemingly open to finding an agreement that works for both the club and the player. Wolves must now finalise terms with Rennes and secure Wooh’s approval to conclude the move.
Given Wolves’ need to reinforce their defensive options and Wooh’s willingness to join a Premier League outfit, there is cautious optimism at Molineux that a deal can be struck soon.
Meanwhile, Wooh is said to be “not at all happy” about how aspects of the potential move have been portrayed publicly in recent weeks. He is keen to stress that he is not “the bad guy” in the situation, according to sources familiar with his camp.
With pre-season preparations underway and Pereira keen to reshape his squad, the coming days could be crucial as Wolves look to get the signing over the line before rivals make their move.
For now, all eyes remain on whether Wolves can match Stade Rennais’ valuation and satisfy the player’s ambitions. If they do, Christopher Wooh may soon be the latest addition to the Premier League, as he looks to continue his development on one of Europe’s biggest stages.
