Sergio Reguilon has emerged as a serious summer option for Everton, as the club continues to strengthen its squad under new ownership and ahead of the move to their new stadium.
The 28-year-old left-back is available on a free transfer following the expiration of his Tottenham Hotspur contract, ending a five-year association with the North London side. Reguilon’s time at Spurs was a mixed one, punctuated by loan spells at Atletico Madrid, Manchester United and Brentford. Despite an inconsistent run of form, his top-level experience in both England and Spain makes him a compelling option.
According to Caught Offside (14 July), Everton have expressed interest in the Spaniard alongside fellow Premier League sides West Ham United and Bournemouth. The Toffees are in the market for reinforcements at left-back, with Vitaliy Mykolenko currently the only recognised senior option in that position.
The same report claims Reguilon has also been offered to Serie A giants Juventus and AC Milan. The latter are said to be monitoring him more closely following Theo Hernandez’s big-money departure to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. No firm moves have yet materialised from Italy, with Reguilon said to be holding out for guarantees over regular first-team football.
West Ham had been leading the chase among the English clubs, but their pursuit of El Hadji Malick Diouf may shift their focus, potentially opening the door for Everton to capitalise.
From a financial perspective, the deal is being described as a low-risk, high-upside move for the Friedkin Group – Everton’s new owners – who are still in the early stages of their long-term squad overhaul. Reguilon’s availability on a free transfer makes the proposition even more appealing.
“A deal for Reguilon – who has played 81 Premier League games – would be a win-win scenario for the Friedkin Group, even if this news does come as a surprise,” Caught Offside noted.
Everton manager David Moyes is understood to be interested in the player and views him as a potentially key addition with Premier League pedigree and attacking qualities. Reguilon recorded two goals and 11 assists across his 81 top-flight appearances, offering forward thrust from deep – a quality Moyes is keen to inject into the squad.
“If Reguilon can rediscover the form he had during his first season at Tottenham, he can provide a similar threat at both ends of the pitch to that of Mykolenko,” the report continued.
Should Reguilon fail to meet expectations at Goodison Park, the club could still benefit from his resale value, offering another layer of financial protection to the deal.
Everton’s transfer strategy under the Friedkin Group appears to be leaning toward calculated risks and experienced reinforcements – a model that may serve them well as they prepare for life in a new stadium and look to re-establish themselves as a Premier League force.
The ball is now in Reguilon’s court as he weighs up his next step. With interest from both sides of the Channel, Everton will hope first-team assurances and the opportunity to be part of a rebuilding project prove enough to seal the deal.
