Everton’s summer transfer business is gathering serious momentum, with reports emerging that the club has opened talks to sign Real Sociedad winger Takefusa Kubo in what could be a marquee move to bolster David Moyes’ attacking options.
The Toffees have already secured the £27.6m signing of striker Thierno Barry from Villarreal, a 6ft 5in powerhouse expected to lead the line following Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s departure. However, with loan attackers Jack Harrison and Jesper Lindstrom returning to their parent clubs, Everton remain short on creativity out wide.
That gap has led Moyes to target Kubo, the 24-year-old Japanese international widely regarded as one of La Liga’s most exciting wingers. According to TEAMtalk, Everton have made initial contact with Real Sociedad to discuss a potential deal, though they face competition from clubs in both the Bundesliga and La Liga.
Crucially, Kubo is believed to be open to a move, with the Premier League offering an enticing new challenge. He remains under contract at Sociedad until 2029, with a release clause reportedly set around £50m.
Since arriving at Sociedad permanently in 2022, Kubo has blossomed into a key figure. He was named the club’s Player of the Season in his debut campaign and has continued to impress with his creativity and intelligence on the pitch.
Zinedine Zidane, who oversaw part of his development at Real Madrid, once described him as “a very interesting player for the present and the future.” Meanwhile, former Mallorca CEO Maheta Molango offered high praise for the winger’s mindset:
“I was very impressed by Kubo when I met him. He’s super humble, super down to earth. His talent is obvious, but the reason why he will one day be a football superstar is his head. He sees things that other people don’t see – the ability to see a pass and pick a long ball. His intelligence is outstanding.”
Last season, Kubo made 36 appearances for Sociedad, registering five goals and several assists. According to FBref, he completed 75 successful take-ons, created 45 chances, and averaged 3.32 crosses per 90 minutes – placing him in the 86th percentile for wingers in Europe’s top leagues.
It’s exactly the kind of supply line Everton’s new No. 9 could thrive on. Barry, who scored 11 goals last season and ranked highly for attacking runs and aerial duels, is tailor-made for a wide creator like Kubo.
Moyes, known for favouring disciplined, hard-working wingers who deliver accurate early crosses, may see Kubo as the perfect blend of technical quality and tactical fit.
Should Everton land the Japanese international, it could form a potent new-look frontline – one built around Barry’s physicality and Kubo’s finesse. For a club aiming to rebuild after a turbulent few seasons, this could be the spark needed to turn promise into progress at Goodison Park.
