Godwin ObajeEverton have opened discussions with Juventus over a potential deal to bring Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz back to the Premier League, Inside Futbol understands.
Juventus general manager Damien Comolli, who previously held a role at Liverpool, is currently “in talks” with the Merseyside outfit regarding Luiz’s transfer, with the Serie A side keen to offload the player on a permanent basis.
The 26-year-old midfielder, who previously enjoyed a successful five-year spell with Aston Villa, is also a target for Graham Potter’s West Ham United. However, the Hammers have so far proposed a loan arrangement that has left Juventus unconvinced.
According to Italian outlet Tuttosport, West Ham are offering an initial €10 million loan fee with a further €30 million obligation to buy at the end of the season, contingent on performance-related objectives. Juventus, however, prefer to conclude a full sale this summer and are reluctant to wait for delayed financial guarantees.
This could open the door for Everton, who are understood to be preparing a proposal that better aligns with the Italian club’s financial expectations. The Toffees are in the market for a central midfielder as manager Sean Dyche looks to bolster his options in the middle of the park ahead of the new campaign.
West Ham, meanwhile, are also active in the transfer window, recently securing the signing of El Hadji Malick Diouf from Slavia Prague as they aim to improve on last season’s inconsistent displays. Despite interest in Luiz, they may now need to rethink their strategy if they are to beat Everton to his signature.
Luiz has struggled to make a significant impact in Turin since his move from Villa Park. Despite his talent, his time in Serie A has been largely underwhelming, with just 19 league appearances for the Bianconeri.
Nonetheless, his Premier League pedigree remains respected. During his time at Aston Villa, Luiz racked up 204 appearances across all competitions and was involved in 46 goals, proving to be a key presence in midfield. Villa were initially reluctant to part ways with the Brazil international, but Financial Fair Play regulations under the Premier League’s PSR rules ultimately forced their hand.
There has been no indication of a return to Villa Park for Luiz, as Unai Emery’s side continue to navigate UEFA’s own financial compliance requirements this summer.
The situation now hinges on whether Everton can structure a deal acceptable to Juventus, potentially giving them the upper hand over West Ham.
As it stands, Juventus remain firm in their desire to move Luiz on in a permanent transfer. With talks ongoing, the Brazilian could soon be set for a Premier League return – but which club lands his signature remains up in the air.
