Rangers Eye Conor Coady in Triple Signing Push Ahead of Champions League Showdown

Rangers are closing in on a deal to sign experienced centre-back Conor Coady as Russell Martin ramps up his summer recruitment drive ahead of a pivotal Champions League qualifier against Panathinaikos next month.

The Ibrox boss has already overseen significant movement in the transfer market, and Coady is one of three potential arrivals being targeted in what would represent a statement of intent from the Glasgow giants. Liverpool left-back Owen Beck and Maccabi Tel Aviv striker Dor Turgeman are also high on the club’s shortlist, with the trio seen as key reinforcements ahead of the new campaign.

Coady, 32, is no stranger to top-level football, having made nearly 200 Premier League appearances during spells with Wolves and Everton before joining Leicester City. Despite his leadership qualities, the England international was unable to prevent Leicester’s relegation from the top flight last season.

Now, with the Foxes preparing for life back in the Championship—and having just parted company with manager Ruud van Nistelrooy—Rangers are poised to make their move. According to The Daily Record (28 June), the Dutchman’s surprise sacking has “slowed down” progress on the deal, but Leicester are still expected to give Coady the “green light” to complete a move north.

A long-term deal is reportedly on the table at Ibrox, with Martin keen to bolster his defensive options with a player of Coady’s pedigree and leadership. Coady’s Premier League record includes 198 appearances, 7 goals, 1 assist, 52 clean sheets and over 250 goals conceded—a testament to his durability and experience at the highest level.

Coady’s leadership credentials, honed during his captaincy at Wolves and recognised with England caps, are viewed as vital for a Rangers side set to compete on multiple fronts this season, including a crucial European campaign.

Alongside the pursuit of Coady, Rangers are also working on a deal for highly-rated Israeli striker Dor Turgeman. As previously reported, the Gers are prepared to meet Maccabi Tel Aviv’s £5million asking price for the 20-year-old, although any agreement is likely to follow outgoing moves—namely Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane.

Meanwhile, a move for Owen Beck would address the need for depth at left-back. The Liverpool youngster, who has impressed during loan spells at Dundee and Bolton Wanderers, is seen as a player with the energy and technical ability to suit Martin’s aggressive, possession-based system.

Timing, however, is of the essence. Rangers face Panathinaikos in just over three weeks in a Champions League qualifier that could define their season, both competitively and financially. Securing Coady, Beck and Turgeman in time for that clash would be a significant boost.

Martin is keen to integrate his new recruits quickly, with pre-season training and tactical preparation now in full swing.
