Rangers are reportedly nearing a deal for Peterborough United winger Kwame Poku – but concerns over his recent injury record have prompted a note of caution from a leading medical expert.
The Ibrox club are believed to have stepped up their pursuit of the Ghana international as Russell Martin looks to inject further attacking verve into his squad ahead of the Champions League qualifiers and the start of the new Scottish Premiership campaign.
Poku, 23, has impressed for the Posh in recent seasons with his direct style, flair, and ability to operate on either flank or as a No.10. He notched 11 goals and 9 assists across all competitions in the 2024/25 campaign, helping Peterborough mount another promotion push from League One. But it’s his spell on the sidelines that has sparked wider discussion ahead of a potential move north.
The winger suffered a hamstring injury that ruled him out for nearly three months during the winter, and although he returned to action before the season’s end, Rangers’ medical team are understood to be scrutinising his fitness as part of the final stages of the deal.
Speaking exclusively about the nature of Poku’s injury, Dr Rajpal Brar, a US-based physical therapist and injury analyst, gave insight into the potential risks involved.
“This is the type of injury that can be manageable if rehab and workload are appropriately planned,” Brar explained. “The good thing is he made it back onto the pitch before the season concluded, which suggests a good level of recovery.”
However, Brar also noted the importance of careful reintegration, especially with Rangers likely to demand high physical output under Martin’s pressing system.
“The key will be progressive loading and regular monitoring. Soft tissue injuries like hamstring strains do carry a risk of recurrence if a player is rushed or not managed correctly,” he added.
For Rangers, the interest in Poku fits a broader recruitment strategy aimed at targeting versatile, high-upside players with resale value. The club have already been active in the market this summer, and Poku’s ability to operate across attacking roles could provide added depth and flexibility in a squad that has already seen several departures.
Peterborough are expected to sanction the move for a fee in the region of £1.5m plus add-ons, with personal terms not expected to be a stumbling block. The Ghanaian, capped twice at senior level, is understood to be keen on the switch, viewing Rangers as a major step up and a platform for potential international recognition ahead of January’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
With Champions League qualifiers looming large, Martin will be eager to integrate any new arrivals quickly – but he will also be wary of any potential setbacks from players still managing the aftermath of previous injuries.
Poku’s arrival would be a statement of intent from Rangers – but one they’ll hope doesn’t come with any lingering fitness complications.
