Matija Frigan Keen on Rangers Move as Cyriel Dessers Future Remains Unclear

Rangers may have found their ideal replacement for Cyriel Dessers, with Croatian striker Matija Frigan publicly admitting his interest in a move to Ibrox. As uncertainty continues to cloud Dessers’ future in Glasgow, head coach Russell Martin could be set to reshape his attacking options ahead of a crucial Champions League qualifier against Panathinaikos next month.

Dessers, 30, remains the subject of transfer interest from AEK Athens, who are reportedly willing to pay around £3.8 million for the Nigerian international. Rangers, however, are holding out for closer to £5 million. While a deal has yet to be struck, there is a growing sense that Martin may be ready to sanction his departure as part of a wider rebuild.

The striker, signed from Cremonese in 2023, endured a mixed campaign last season. While he managed an impressive 18 goals in 35 Scottish Premiership appearances, question marks have persisted over his all-round contribution and physical presence.

Former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness described Dessers as “marmite” to Rangers fans, adding: “He disappeared and went invisible at times,” suggesting the striker may not suit the style Martin wants to implement. Wyness also claimed the new manager would be seeking a “tougher” and more robust squad to meet the physical and tactical demands of both domestic and European competition.

Statistics from the 2024/25 campaign underline the concern. Dessers won just 33% of his duels overall, with a particularly low aerial duel success rate of 31% and a ground duel rate of 34%. He also missed 21 big chances across the season, highlighting inconsistency in front of goal.

With these figures in mind, it’s perhaps no surprise that Martin is reportedly open to moving on from the striker to make room for new attacking talent. One such option is Matija Frigan, and the 21-year-old has done little to play down speculation linking him to Ibrox.

Speaking to the Daily Record, the Croatian admitted a move to the Scottish Premiership is one that appeals to him: “Rangers? That style of league would suit me. I think I’m a player for that type of football.”

Currently playing for Westerlo in the Belgian Pro League, Frigan has shown plenty of promise with his movement, pressing and clinical finishing – qualities that could complement Martin’s tactical preferences. At a reported valuation of £6.5 million, he would also represent a younger, long-term investment compared to Dessers.

With a month remaining before Rangers begin their Champions League campaign, the pressure is mounting for Martin to finalise his squad. While Dessers’ future remains unresolved, the growing interest in Frigan – and the striker’s own enthusiasm – could make this a natural changing of the guard in the number nine role.

Should Rangers cash in on Dessers and complete a deal for Frigan, it could mark the beginning of a more dynamic and physically assertive front line under Martin’s stewardship – one better equipped for the rigours of a new era at Ibrox.
