Ashley Young is now poised to join Ipswich Town following the collapse of his proposed return to Watford, according to fresh reports.
The veteran full-back, who recently departed Everton after two seasons at Goodison Park, had been tipped for an emotional homecoming to Vicarage Road — the club where he began his professional career. Watford were reportedly keen on re-signing the 40-year-old and even considered naming him captain. However, the deal has fallen through due to financial constraints.
Despite being offered a new deal at Everton, Young opted to move on after rejecting terms that would have seen his wages significantly reduced. The former England international is determined to continue playing and believes he still has plenty to contribute on the pitch, even as he enters the twilight of a remarkable career.
According to talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook, Ipswich Town are now leading the race to sign the former Manchester United and Aston Villa man.
“Told Ashley Young is now likely to join #ITFC,” Crook revealed on X (formerly Twitter).
“#WatfordFC were keen to re-sign him and maybe even make him captain but ultimately his wage demands did not fit their structure.”
Young had previously made a romantic return to Aston Villa in 2021, and a move back to Watford would have marked another sentimental chapter. However, the financial realities of the Championship proved a stumbling block for the Hornets, who were unable to meet his salary expectations without breaching their internal wage policy.
That’s where Ipswich Town, newly promoted to the Premier League, now appear ready to step in. The Tractor Boys are actively strengthening their squad ahead of the new season, and Young’s experience and leadership qualities would be a valuable addition to Kieran McKenna’s setup.
A move to Portman Road would give Young the chance to continue competing at the highest level, and also offer Ipswich a seasoned professional who has won major honours across his career, including the Premier League, FA Cup, and Europa League.
While no deal has been officially confirmed yet, Ipswich’s ambition and financial flexibility could help them seal the signing — something Watford could not manage.
