Godwin ObajeNagelsmann Factor Could Boost Leeds United’s Pursuit of Hoffenheim Midfielder Anton Stach
Leeds United are stepping up their pursuit of Hoffenheim midfielder Anton Stach, with reports in Germany suggesting the influence of national team boss Julian Nagelsmann could be a decisive factor in the player’s potential move to Elland Road.
Stach, 25, is believed to be open to a Premier League switch this summer, and sources close to the deal indicate that Leeds have emerged as a serious contender. According to Kicker (16 July), a move to Leeds could reignite the German international’s hopes of returning to the national team fold, something which may weigh heavily in his decision.
While Hoffenheim are reportedly holding out for a fee in excess of £17.4million, Leeds’ promotion to the Premier League has strengthened their financial position and the club’s hierarchy is understood to be confident of getting a deal over the line in the coming weeks.
Stach made 30 Bundesliga appearances last season, contributing one goal and two assists. Though his departure would represent a sporting loss for Hoffenheim, the financial return could help the German club retool their squad. From Leeds’ perspective, the addition of a defensive midfielder with international pedigree would provide a much-needed boost to Daniel Farke’s midfield options.
Stach’s appeal to Leeds is not just based on talent—his ambition to reclaim a spot in the Germany squad plays perfectly into the club’s favour. With Julian Nagelsmann keeping tabs on players abroad and the Premier League offering an ideal platform for exposure, Elland Road could serve as the perfect springboard for Stach to re-establish himself on the international scene.
The report states: “A move to Elland Road could potentially present a medium-term opportunity for the 25-year-old to get back into Nagelsmann’s plans.”
While Stach is open to leaving Hoffenheim, Leeds face stiff competition for his signature. The club cannot afford another setback in the transfer market after losing out to Sunderland in the race for Habib Diarra.
The pressure is mounting on 49ers Enterprises to deliver. With the likes of Ethan Ampadu, Ao Tanaka and Ilia Gruev already on the books, Farke still needs more depth and experience to ensure Leeds can compete across all areas of the pitch. The Peacocks were left short in midfield last season, with injuries forcing them to bring in Josuha Guilavogui on a free transfer mid-campaign.
Meanwhile, another midfield reinforcement is close to joining. Newcastle United’s Sean Longstaff is expected at Thorp Arch for a medical on 17 July, with a deal between the clubs nearing completion. Longstaff made 25 Premier League appearances last season and is keen on a move to Elland Road to gain regular minutes.
With Longstaff likely to link up with Ampadu, Leeds could boast a midfield with the right blend of steel and creativity. However, sealing a deal for Stach remains a priority, especially if they want to keep pace with their rivals.
Time is of the essence for the Whites, and with Nagelsmann’s shadow potentially looming large over this deal, Leeds must move decisively to land their man.
