Leeds United are stepping up their summer recruitment drive with interest in Scotland international goalkeeper Angus Gunn, who is currently available on a free transfer.
The Whites, under the stewardship of Daniel Farke, are preparing for their return to the Premier League after a successful promotion campaign, and bolstering the goalkeeping department is seen as a key priority ahead of the 2025/26 season.
With pre-season preparations already underway at Thorp Arch and the club’s top-flight opener against Everton just weeks away, the focus is on reinforcing squad depth. Having already landed key additions such as Jaka Bijol, Gabriel Gudmundsson, and Sebastiaan Bornauw, the next area of concern appears to be between the posts.
While Leeds have been linked with a potential move for Fenerbahce and Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic, a new and potentially more cost-effective option has emerged in the form of Angus Gunn. The 29-year-old recently left Norwich City after his contract expired and is now being considered by Leeds as a shrewd free transfer option.
According to journalist Barry Anderson, Leeds have expressed interest in Gunn, who offers both experience and familiarity for Farke. The German manager knows Gunn well from their time together at Norwich, where Farke previously praised the goalkeeper’s quality and potential.
“Angus is very highly-rated and a really talented goalkeeper,” Farke said during their time at Carrow Road. “He’s brilliant with his feet as well as his hands and is tall too. We’re happy to have him here for the next season and are thankful to Manchester City for helping us with this deal. I’m looking forward to working with such a great talent.”
Gunn, who has 16 international caps for Scotland, was described by former Scotland keeper David Marshall as “special” for his performances on the international stage. His blend of shot-stopping ability and ball distribution would provide Leeds with a goalkeeper well-suited to the demands of Premier League football under Farke’s system.
A product of Manchester City’s academy, Gunn has made 31 Premier League appearances and a further 166 in the Championship during spells with Southampton, Stoke City, and most recently, Norwich. His experience, particularly in high-pressure environments, could make him a reliable option either as a starting goalkeeper or as a strong backup to challenge Illan Meslier.
Having faced Leeds on multiple occasions in his career, including five defeats at Elland Road—four of which came as a starter—Gunn knows exactly what the atmosphere and expectations are like in West Yorkshire. A move to Elland Road would offer him a fresh opportunity at the highest level, while providing Leeds with a proven option between the sticks.
With the season fast approaching and Leeds aiming to solidify their Premier League status, securing an experienced, Premier League-tested goalkeeper on a free transfer could prove to be one of the club’s smartest summer moves.
