Leeds United have seen their latest bid for Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff knocked back, with the Magpies holding out for a higher fee amid growing interest in the player.
According to The Yorkshire Evening Post, the Whites submitted an all-inclusive offer worth £12 million for the 26-year-old, comprised of £10 million in guaranteed payments and a further £2 million in add-ons. However, Newcastle rejected the proposal, and there are now concerns at Elland Road that the club may be forced to explore alternative midfield options.
Longstaff, a product of Newcastle’s academy, is entering the final 12 months of his current contract. While that situation opens the door for a potential sale this summer, the club remains keen to extract full value for one of their homegrown assets. It’s understood that the Tyneside club are yet to clearly communicate their asking price, but they are believed to want a significantly improved package if they are to part with the midfielder.
The 26-year-old struggled for minutes in the latter half of last season and is reportedly open to a move in search of more regular football. With Eddie Howe’s midfield trio of Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton and Sandro Tonali unlikely to be displaced, Longstaff may find opportunities limited again in the upcoming campaign.
Despite this, Newcastle are in no rush to sell. Longstaff remains a valued squad member, and the club must weigh up whether to cash in now or risk losing him for nothing next summer. There is also the consideration of Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), with a sale potentially helping the Magpies balance their financial position ahead of further incoming business.
Leeds are eager to bring in experienced top-flight players following their promotion from the Championship, and Longstaff fits the profile Daniel Farke is seeking in midfield. However, the club is unwilling to overpay and may soon walk away from the deal if Newcastle continue to stand firm.
In the event that negotiations stall permanently, Leeds do have alternative targets lined up. One option being considered is Joe Willock, Longstaff’s teammate at Newcastle, who has also been linked with a potential move away from St James’ Park this summer.
Another name on the radar is Hoffenheim’s Anton Stach. The German international is well regarded for his physical presence and passing range, and while he lacks Premier League experience, Leeds believe he could adapt quickly to English football.
Ultimately, Longstaff remains high on Leeds’ shortlist, but the club will not allow talks to drag on indefinitely. If no breakthrough is made soon, the Whites are expected to pivot toward alternative targets as they continue their preparations for life back in the Premier League.
For now, Leeds must decide whether to return with an improved bid — or accept that the Magpies are not prepared to do business at their current valuation.
