Everton Drop McGinn Pursuit as Moyes Eyes Richarlison Return Amid Transfer Shake-Up

Everton have cooled their interest in Aston Villa captain John McGinn, despite manager David Moyes identifying the Scotland international as a key target in this summer’s transfer window.

According to Give Me Sport (9 July), Villa are unwilling to part ways with the 30-year-old midfielder, forcing the Toffees to reconsider their recruitment plans. Moyes is believed to be prioritising experience in midfield, but Villa’s firm stance has made a deal unlikely.

McGinn, who has become a mainstay at Villa Park with over 280 appearances, had been seen as an ideal addition to Moyes’ squad. His blend of leadership, physicality, and footballing intelligence made him a desirable option to reinforce Everton’s midfield, particularly following the departure of Abdoulaye Doucouré.

Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp previously offered high praise for McGinn’s impact at Villa, saying:
“Everybody agrees when you look at Villa, the players they have brought in make massive sense. They have speed in the wings, Watkins up front, McGinn is super smart, physical as well, but really looking for balls in behind.”

With Villa refusing to negotiate, Moyes is now expected to pivot towards other targets. However, his desire to bring in proven Premier League talent remains unchanged, especially as the Blues aim to avoid another relegation scrap.

Attention has now turned to former Everton striker Richarlison, who could be available following growing uncertainty around his future at Tottenham Hotspur. The 28-year-old Brazil international has struggled for form and fitness in North London and may seek a fresh start.

Fabrizio Romano reported on 9 July that Spurs are actively pursuing Brentford forward Yoane Wissa—a move driven by manager Thomas Frank, who is keen to reunite with the striker. Wissa’s arrival could push Richarlison further down the pecking order, opening the door for a potential Goodison Park return.

Richarlison managed just four goals in 15 Premier League appearances last season and continues to battle recurring injury setbacks. With Tottenham said to be demanding around £45million for his services, Everton are cautious about making a major investment.

However, a cut-price deal could interest Moyes, who has long admired the former Toffees fan-favourite. Richarlison scored 53 goals in 152 appearances for Everton between 2018 and 2022, becoming a talismanic figure during his time at the club.

Given Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s ongoing fitness issues and the need for attacking reinforcements, a move for Richarlison would inject much-needed firepower into Everton’s frontline—if the deal makes financial sense.

Moyes has already added Thierno Barry to his ranks this summer, with the young striker completing his medical at Finch Farm earlier this week. But the veteran boss is keen on adding further quality and depth as he rebuilds a squad capable of stabilising the club’s Premier League status.
