Rangers appear on the verge of landing one of their priority summer signings as Thelo Aasgaard has now completed his medical ahead of a move to Ibrox, Football Insider understands.
The 22-year-old attacking midfielder, who impressed last season with Wigan Athletic, has long been on Russell Martin’s radar as he looks to reshape his squad ahead of the new Scottish Premiership campaign. Sources close to the deal suggest that Aasgaard is “excited by the project” at Rangers and sees the move as a major step up in his career.
It is understood that Rangers will pay an initial fee in the region of £1.5 million to Luton Town, who only signed Aasgaard from Wigan last summer but have been open to negotiations as they reconfigure their own squad following relegation. Add-ons could push the fee closer to £2 million if certain performance targets are met.
Aasgaard’s imminent arrival will be viewed as a significant statement of intent from Martin, who has wasted no time making clear to the Ibrox hierarchy the players he wants to build around.
“This rebuild is crucial if we’re to challenge Celtic properly,” a source close to the club told Football Insider. “Russell has been very clear about the profile of player he needs, and Aasgaard ticks so many boxes — young, creative, technically excellent, and hungry to prove himself at a bigger club.”
It is understood that Martin personally made the case for Aasgaard, having tracked the Norwegian youth international’s progress over the past two seasons. The Rangers boss is believed to have highlighted the midfielder’s versatility and eye for goal as key attributes that can add an extra dimension to the Gers’ attack.
“He’s the sort of player who can unlock tight games,” the same source added. “Fans want players who can make things happen in the final third, and Thelo has that spark.”
Aasgaard, who came through Wigan’s academy system, made 41 appearances last term, contributing six goals and four assists in all competitions. Those who have watched him closely believe his skill set will translate well to the Scottish game, particularly given Rangers’ need to break down stubborn low blocks in domestic fixtures.
