Rangers Confirm Two New Coaching Appointments and Goalkeeper Contract Extension

Rangers have strengthened their backroom team with the appointment of Sal Bibbo as goalkeeping coach and Mike Williamson as first-team coach, as Russell Martin continues to shape his staff ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Bibbo, 50, arrives with a wealth of experience, having held coaching roles at Arsenal, Reading, and most recently Sheffield Wednesday. Williamson, 41, brings managerial pedigree from his time in charge of Gateshead, MK Dons, and most recently Carlisle United.

Martin, who was named Rangers manager in June, hailed the appointments as key additions to his coaching setup. “I am delighted to have Mike and Sal join my team ahead of the new season,” he said.

“I played with Mike at Wycombe Wanderers so we go back a long way, and I know the qualities he can bring to this group. As a player he played at the very top level and is an experienced coach having been a manager himself.

“I am also really happy to bring Sal into the team, he has a lot of experience and a strong track record of developing goalkeepers. After speaking to him it was clear that his knowledge and character will be a real asset to the players and the staff, and I am looking forward to working with them both.”

Sporting Director Kevin Thelwell echoed Martin’s enthusiasm: “I would like to welcome both Mike and Sal to Rangers. They are both experienced coaches who will bring a lot of knowledge to the club.

“Their addition strengthens Russell Martin’s coaching team and reflects our continued commitment to building the best environment capable of delivering success on and off the pitch.”

The duo are set to be in the dugout for Rangers’ first pre-season friendly this Sunday against Club Brugge at Ibrox, where supporters will also get a first look at four of the club’s summer signings – Lyall Cameron, Max Aarons, Emmanuel Fernandez, and Joe Rothwell.

With further reinforcements expected in the coming weeks, Rangers continue to be linked with Luton Town’s Norwegian midfielder Thelo Aasgaard, as well as defensive targets Conor Coady of Leicester City and Wolves centre-half Nasser Djiga.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Kieran Wright has signed a one-year contract extension. The 26-year-old, who joined Rangers in 2016, will provide back-up to senior options Jack Butland and Liam Kelly.

Wright spent the second half of last season on loan at Airdrieonians, making 24 appearances in the Championship, and his extension adds depth to the goalkeeping ranks for the coming campaign.

With Martin’s backroom team taking shape and the transfer activity ongoing, there’s a sense of renewed structure and ambition at Ibrox as Rangers prepare for a season where expectations will again be high—both domestically and in Europe.
