Rangers have reportedly secured the signing of Joe Rothwell from Bournemouth, with the midfielder set to become one of Russell Martin’s first key additions of the summer transfer window.
According to Sky Sports News, the Ibrox club have reached an agreement with the Premier League side to sign the 30-year-old on a permanent deal. Rothwell had entered the final year of his contract on the south coast, and while the fee remains undisclosed, it’s understood Rangers have moved swiftly to beat off competition from other clubs—including sides in Spain’s La Liga.
The news follows earlier reports from Rangers Review which broke the initial story of the club’s concrete interest in Rothwell, confirming that talks were at an advanced stage earlier today. It is believed that the player has agreed to a two-year contract with the option of a third year, tying him to the Glasgow giants potentially until 2028.
Rothwell’s connection with manager Russell Martin played a crucial role in the move. The pair worked together during the first half of last season at Southampton, where Martin’s structured, possession-based system aligned well with Rothwell’s strengths as a creative and technically proficient central midfielder. The duo played a part in helping the Saints win promotion to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs.
Following that successful stint, Rothwell spent the second half of the 2024–25 campaign on loan at Leeds United, where he once again contributed to another promotion push—this time under Daniel Farke—as the Whites returned to the Premier League. His consistent performances at Championship level have kept him on the radar of top clubs looking for midfield depth and experience.
Sky’s report also claims Rothwell turned down interest from La Liga in favour of a move to Ibrox, drawn by the prospect of working under Martin once more and competing for silverware in Scotland, alongside the opportunity of European football.
The former Blackburn Rovers playmaker brings a versatile profile to Rangers’ midfield. Known for his ability to operate as both a deep-lying playmaker and an advanced ball-carrier, Rothwell is expected to provide balance and control in a department currently undergoing transition. The departures of John Lundstram and Ryan Jack this summer have left Rangers short of experience and composure in the middle of the park—gaps Rothwell could help fill immediately.
His addition is viewed internally as a low-risk, high-upside move, given his familiarity with Martin’s tactical setup and his proven record of success in competitive environments.
