Newcastle United have completed a double signing from Rangers, landing teenage prospects Alfie Hutchinson and Oliver Goodbrand following the expiry of their contracts at Ibrox.
The highly-rated duo have agreed to join the Premier League club amid interest from several other English top-flight sides. Both players are considered significant talents within their age group and are expected to join Newcastle’s development setup initially.
While Rangers will receive cross-border training compensation for the pair, the financial return will be limited — particularly in Hutchinson’s case. The striker only arrived at Auchenhowie from Hearts last summer, meaning his short tenure at the Glasgow club reduces the compensation owed. In contrast, Goodbrand is a homegrown product, and Rangers will be entitled to a larger sum due to the time he spent progressing through their academy ranks.
Their departure represents another blow to Rangers’ efforts to retain emerging talent. In recent years, the club has seen several promising young players exit for English academies, most notably striker Rory Wilson, who joined Aston Villa in 2022.
The exits of Hutchinson and Goodbrand come at a time of structural change behind the scenes at Ibrox. New sporting director Kevin Thelwell, who arrived as part of the club’s ongoing modernisation under the 49ers Enterprises ownership group, will now face the urgent task of tightening the talent pipeline. Ensuring clearer first-team pathways and retaining top academy prospects is expected to be a key focus of his early tenure.
The departures highlight the ongoing challenge facing Scottish clubs in competing with Premier League academies, both in terms of facilities and financial incentives. Rangers have invested heavily in youth development, but the lure of England remains a significant obstacle when it comes to keeping hold of elite youngsters.
However, the Ibrox club are not standing still. Rangers have also made a notable academy signing of their own this summer, securing the signature of 16-year-old striker Zebedee Lawson from Brighton & Hove Albion. The teenager, who is highly rated within the English youth system, is expected to link up with the Auchenhowie setup in the coming weeks.
Lawson’s arrival is part of a broader recruitment strategy that balances long-term development with immediate first-team reinforcements. Manager Russell Martin, who is reshaping his squad after a challenging season, has already overseen several new arrivals including Max Aarons and Lyall Cameron, with more deals anticipated ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
While the departure of Hutchinson and Goodbrand is a setback for Rangers’ youth programme, the appointment of Thelwell — an experienced operator with a track record of academy development from his time at Everton and Wolves — offers hope that such losses can be stemmed in future.
As Rangers aim to rebuild and reassert themselves domestically and in Europe, ensuring that the club can retain and develop its top young talent will be every bit as crucial as the headline signings making their way to Ibrox.
