Junior Firpo Set for Real Betis Return After Leeds United Exit, Club Director Confirms Advanced Talks

Junior Firpo is edging closer to a return to Real Betis following confirmation that the left-back will depart Leeds United as a free agent when his contract expires at the end of June.

The 28-year-old, who originally left Betis in 2019 to join Barcelona before moving to Leeds two years later, is now poised to complete an emotional homecoming to the Andalusian club where his professional career began.

Real Betis sporting director Manu Fajardo confirmed during a press conference on Friday that discussions are ongoing and at an advanced stage, with both sides working to finalise the remaining details of the deal.

“It’s true that there are talks with Junior Firpo. He’s a free agent,” Fajardo told the Spanish press, as relayed by Mundo Deportivo.
“His signing hasn’t materialised, there are still some details to be worked out. Let him serve as an example that he’s a player who left in his day and is now extremely eager to return.”

Firpo’s willingness to rejoin Betis has been evident for several weeks, with earlier reports from Diario de Sevilla suggesting the Dominican Republic international is prepared to reject higher financial offers elsewhere in order to return to the Benito Villamarín Stadium.

Fajardo reinforced this narrative, highlighting the player’s desire to prioritise the club and his connection to it over financial incentives.

“Does the salary have to be lowered? We’re proud that players who left are willing to come back, putting other things before financial matters,” he said.
“If Real Betis, for example, has a chance of bringing Junior Firpo back, it’s because the player is more than willing to put these kinds of issues behind him.”

The former Spain U21 international made 45 Premier League appearances for Leeds following his move from Barcelona in 2021. Though his time in England has been mixed, his quality and La Liga experience remain valued by Betis, who are aiming to strengthen ahead of the new campaign.

Firpo previously spent five formative years at Betis, progressing from their youth academy to the first team, where his energetic displays as an attacking full-back earned him a high-profile move to the Camp Nou. Now, after a five-year spell away, he looks ready to return to where it all began.
