How an Icelandic Gig Sparked the Thunder of Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song”Led Zeppelin’s discography is rife with mythic imagery and larger-than-life soundscapes, but few tracks match the elemental power of “Immigrant Song.” With its pounding riff and Viking-inspired lyrics, the opening track of Led Zeppelin III was born not from fantasy, but from a real-world encounter with the icy mystique of Iceland. In June, on what turned out to be a defining trip, the band journeyed to Reykjavik for a one-off performance at Laugardalshöll. The visit wasn’t part of a major tour, but rather a cultural exchange organised by the Icelandic government. What unfolded left such a lasting impression on frontman Robert Plant that it inspired the now-iconic lyrics: “We come from the land of the ice and snow.”“We weren’t being pompous,” Plant later reflected in conversation with author Chris Welch. “We did come from the land of the ice and snow. We were guests of the Icelandic Government on a cultural mission. We were invited to play a concert in Reykjavik, and the day before we arrived all the civil servants went on strike and the gig was going to be cancelled. The university prepared a concert hall for us and it was phenomenal. The response from the kids was remarkable and we had a great time. ‘Immigrant Song’ was about that trip, and it was the opening track on the album that was intended to be incredibly different.”It wasn’t just the mystical landscape, geothermal pools and unrelenting daylight that fuelled the song’s mythic quality—it was the raw intensity with which the band were working at the time. Guitarist Jimmy Page had already begun laying the groundwork for what would become one of Zeppelin’s most recognisable riffs.“Right at the early stages of rehearsing, when I think it was just John Bonham and myself, I had ‘Immigrant Song,’ ‘Out on the Tiles’ and also ‘Friends,’” Page told Total Guitar. “If you say straight away you’ve got ‘Friends’ and ‘Immigrant Song,’ already it’s got the yin and yang. And there’s all this other stuff that’s going to go in.”“Immigrant Song” made its live debut just days after the Iceland concert at the Bath Festival, and later, it was released as the lead—and only—single from Led Zeppelin III. Its stomping rhythm, Norse-inspired narrative, and unrelenting power signalled a shift in Zeppelin’s sound—bridging the ferocity of their earlier albums with the more experimental textures to come.Plant would eventually return to Reykjavik as a solo performer decades later, and in 2019—nearly 50 years after that first performance—he finally delivered “Immigrant Song” on Icelandic soil once more.Though born of a single trip, “Immigrant Song” became a battle cry for Led Zeppelin’s creative ethos: fierce, unexpected, and utterly unrelenting. The land of ice and snow didn’t just shape a lyric—it sparked a legend.
