Newcastle United are once again facing an unwelcome summer of speculation over the future of Anthony Gordon, as renewed links with Liverpool threaten to unsettle one of Eddie Howe’s key players.
It’s almost exactly 12 months since similar whispers first emerged, with Gordon being touted for a return to Merseyside and a possible move to his boyhood club. Now, with Euro 2024 in full swing and Premier League clubs ramping up recruitment activity, talk of a potential £100 million exit is gathering pace.
The 23-year-old remains one of Newcastle’s prized assets, and after a stellar 2024/25 campaign, it’s little surprise that suitors are circling. But for the Magpies, the timing is again deeply frustrating, echoing last summer’s tension when Gordon was also the subject of widespread transfer speculation. Back then, the club stood firm and Gordon knuckled down – producing arguably the best form of his career to date.
His pace, aggression and cutting edge were central to Newcastle’s attacking approach last season. Gordon’s output in terms of goals and assists hit new heights, earning him widespread praise and strengthening his claims for a regular role in the England setup. However, sources close to the player suggest the lure of Liverpool remains real. Gordon grew up a Reds supporter and has made no secret of his emotional connection to the club. One moment last season hinted at the emotional conflict that may be bubbling beneath the surface. Gordon’s red card against Brighton late in the campaign ruled him out of the Carabao Cup final – a match Newcastle lost – and denied him the chance to face Liverpool at Wembley. It was a bitter blow.
“It was hard to take,” Gordon admitted at the time. “I wanted to be out there with the lads, especially in such a big game.”
Whether that frustration adds fuel to the fire remains to be seen, but Newcastle are maintaining a composed stance. The club’s valuation of Gordon is understood to be in the region of £100 million, and sources insist they are under no pressure to sell unless that figure is met in full.
Behind the scenes, Howe is believed to be keen to retain Gordon at all costs. The winger’s versatility, work rate and maturity have made him a trusted figure in the dressing room, and with the club still eyeing consistent European qualification, losing a player of his calibre would be a significant step backwards.
