Rangers Football Club is on the cusp of appointing a new permanent manager, following the interim tenure of Barry Ferguson, as the club undergoes significant changes both on and off the pitch.
Final Talks Underway with Leading Candidates
The search for Philippe Clement’s successor has intensified, with final discussions taking place with two prominent candidates: Davide Ancelotti and Russell Martin. Ancelotti, 35, has amassed over a decade of experience assisting his father, Carlo Ancelotti, at elite clubs such as Bayern Munich, Everton, Napoli, and Real Madrid. Opting not to join his father’s current tenure with the Brazilian national team, Davide is seeking his first managerial role and has attracted interest from clubs including Serie A’s Pisa, Spain’s Deportivo La Coruña, and Swiss champions FC Basel.
Russell Martin, known for his progressive football philosophy, has also emerged as a strong contender. Both candidates are set for final interviews, with Rangers’ newly appointed Sporting Director, Kevin Thelwell, confirming that the club is nearing a decision.
Interim Period Under Barry Ferguson
Following Clement’s dismissal, Barry Ferguson, a former club captain and Hall of Fame inductee, was appointed as interim manager until the end of the season. Ferguson, who previously managed Clyde, Kelty Hearts, and Alloa Athletic, expressed his commitment to the role: “I wasn’t thinking about management, but when the call came, I wasn’t turning it down. I’m going to give everything I’ve got, and we’ll see where it takes us.”
Assisting Ferguson were former Rangers players Neil McCann, Billy Dodds, and Allan McGregor, along with Issame Charai, who remained from Clement’s coaching staff.
Leadership Changes and Strategic Vision
The managerial search coincides with a significant leadership overhaul at Rangers. A U.S. consortium, led by Pennsylvania-based entrepreneur Andrew Cavenagh and backed by 49ers Enterprises, has acquired a 51% controlling stake in the club. Cavenagh has assumed the role of chairman, with Paraag Marathe, president of 49ers Enterprises and chairman of Leeds United, appointed as vice-chairman. The consortium plans to inject £20 million into the club, focusing on player acquisitions and infrastructure improvements.
In an open letter to fans, the new leadership emphasized their commitment to winning domestic trophies, competing in Europe, and achieving long-term financial sustainability. They also highlighted plans to restructure the board to include diverse skills and voices, aiming to preserve the rich history and passion of Rangers Football Club.
