Celtic have officially confirmed the departure of long-serving goalkeeper Scott Bain, bringing to an end a seven-year spell at Parkhead that saw the Scottish international pick up a remarkable haul of silverware despite often playing a backup role.
Bain, who first joined Celtic on loan in January 2018 before making the move permanent that summer, has left the club a year before the end of his contract. A Career Defined by Consistency and Team Spirit
Bain began his professional career at Aberdeen but didn’t make a senior appearance for the Dons. It was during his time at Alloa Athletic, where he moved in 2011, that he began to make a name for himself. Bain impressed with his performances as Alloa’s No.1, eventually earning a move to Dundee in 2014.
At Dens Park, Bain established himself as a reliable top-flight goalkeeper, making over 100 appearances across four seasons. His form for Dundee caught the attention of bigger clubs, and in early 2018, he was loaned to Hibernian. However, his stay at Easter Road was brief. Celtic swooped in during the January transfer window, initially signing him on a loan deal, before making the move permanent that summer.
Bain went on to make 78 appearances for Celtic in total. While that number may seem modest over a seven-year span, it’s a testament to his professionalism and commitment that he remained a valuable squad member across multiple managerial regimes — from Brendan Rodgers and Neil Lennon to Ange Postecoglou and now back to Rodgers again.
Notably, Bain did not feature at all in the 2024/25 season, which hinted at an eventual departure. Schmeichel and Sinisalo were clearly preferred by the coaching staff, and with Bain entering the final year of his deal, both parties agreed a clean break was best.

Capped three times by Scotland, Bain’s international career has been sporadic, largely due to limited game-time at club level. However, his inclusion in national squads over the years reflects the high regard in which he is held in the Scottish football community.

A return to a mid-table Premiership side, or even a move to the English lower leagues, would provide Bain the opportunity to become a first-choice goalkeeper again.
Celtic Look Ahead with Doohan Signing
Celtic, meanwhile, are wasting no time in reshaping their goalkeeping department. The club has already lined up a replacement for Bain in the form of Ross Doohan, who is set to arrive on a pre-contract from Aberdeen.
Interestingly, Doohan is a product of Celtic’s own academy and is now returning to his boyhood club at the age of 27. Despite never making a senior appearance for Celtic during his initial spell, he has since gained valuable experience across a variety of clubs including Ayr United, Ross County, and Tranmere Rovers, before settling at Aberdeen.
His free transfer back to Parkhead next month signals a full-circle moment in his career — and gives Celtic added depth in the goalkeeper position heading into the 2025/26 campaign.
