On Thursday, Il Resto del Carlino reported that Bournemouth are challenging Sunderland in the pursuit of Bologna defender Jhon Lucumí.

The Cherries have already seen one bid turned down, and there were suggestions their interest was being used to pressure Sunderland into submitting an improved offer, given that their initial proposal is still under consideration.

According to Quotidiano Sportivo, Sunderland are preparing a second bid following earlier reports that their original offer remains active.

Regis Le Bris’ side are expected to raise their proposal, aiming to get closer to Bologna’s €25 million valuation.

Their next offer will reportedly total €22 million — €20 million upfront plus €2 million in add-ons — but this will only be submitted if Lucumí signals his willingness to join the Championship club.

While Bournemouth are once again mentioned as interested, there’s no indication that manager Andoni Iraola is preparing a renewed bid at this stage.

The 27-year-old centre-back has so far turned down Bologna’s efforts to extend his contract on improved terms, opting instead to explore other opportunities this summer.

If current reports are accurate, Sunderland appear to be leading the race — unless Villarreal turn their interest into a firm offer.

Lucumí’s agent is currently in Spain, reportedly working to drum up interest from La Liga clubs.
